Literature inspired by V\u00e4rmland<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Selma Lagerl\u00f6f grew up in M\u00e5rbacka in Sunne, so it\u2019s no wonder that the manor home has become a tourist attraction and the pride of the municipality! The connection to Sunne and V\u00e4rmland is strong in Lagerl\u00f6f\u2019s literature \u2013 G\u00f6sta Berling\u2019s Saga, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils and Jerusalem all contain descriptions of places in the area. In 1909, she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selma Lagerl\u00f6f and Sunne<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are many authors who have taken inspiration from Swedish environments and places. They have events such as romances and murder scenes take place there. Like Camilla L\u00e4ckberg\u2019s Fj\u00e4llbacka, Mari Jungstedt\u2019s Gotland, Nina Schulman\u2019s Hagfors or Henning Mankell\u2019s series about crime commissioner Wallander\u2019s life in Ystad. So it\u2019s not surprising that Selma Lagerl\u00f6f in her time drew from her surroundings in Sunne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is particularly in G\u00f6sta Berling\u2019s Saga that Selma has her characters live on farms that are taken from manor houses around Sunne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early childhood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fact that Selma Lagerl\u00f6f herself grew up in the manor house M\u00e5rbacka in Sunne is certainly of significance. Maybe she visited the other manor housse with her family as a little girl? It may be that the environments and people there tickled her imagination even then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selma started writing early. She grew up in a bourgeois environment, which at that time often meant that the family\u2019s children were taught at home. A teacher came to M\u00e5rbacka to teach Selma and her siblings both English and French. Selma loved to read and the first book she read is said to have been a book about Native Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father, Lieutenant Gustaf Lagerl\u00f6f, became seriously ill when Selma was 10 years old. Selma read through the entire Bible in the belief that her father would be healed by her reading. Her father recovered, though perhaps not because of the Bible reading. What can be said, however, is that Selma\u2019s language developed through the reading and contributed to her becoming an esteemed author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide through Lagerl\u00f6f\u2019s writings at M\u00e5rbacka<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fantasy and reality, suspense, drama and romance are all required, but it especially helps to get inspiration for a good story from the many characters and environments around. In 1891, Selma Lagerl\u00f6f debuted with the novel G\u00f6sta Berling\u2019s Saga, where environments and farms with names like Sj\u00f6, L\u00f6vdala, Ekeby and Hedeby S\u00e4teri appear. The book is about the Cavaliers who lived here, and the occasional patron who lived on the farms in real life was the inspiration for her cavaliers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selma\u2019s home M\u00e5rbacka is called L\u00f6vdala in the book, and today the manor house is open to visitors. You are guided through the childhood home and told about life on the farm and Selma\u2019s writings. If you want to visit some of the other manor houses Selma described in her stories, check out the list below. The name in parentheses is what she herself called the places in the literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visit manor houses from the books<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  • Ulvsby Herrg\u00e5rd (L\u00e4nsmansg\u00e5rden) Here you can eat and stay at a hotel in the manor house environment. The manor house is located near Fryken\u2019s sound and you can enjoy a sauna and swim from the pier.<\/li>
  • M\u00e5rbacka (L\u00f6vdala) Open to the public during guided tours. Why not sit down in the caf\u00e9 and enjoy a Skr\u00e4dmj\u00f6lsdr\u00f6m or walk through the beautiful garden.<\/li>
  • Gylleby Herrg\u00e5rd (Munkeby) Has functioned as a nursing home for a long time but will open up a hostel in 2018, so you can stay in a manor house environment here.<\/li>
  • Rottneros Herrg\u00e5rd (Ekeby) Is a private residence but can be seen during visits to Rottneros Park.<\/li>
  • \u00d6jerviks G\u00e5rd (Sj\u00f6) The manor house burned down but was rebuilt in the 1960s. Accommodations at Ominne Hide Away have breakfast in the manor house with a fantastic view of Lake Fryken.<\/li>
  • Sundsbergsflygeln is located by Sundsbergs G\u00e5rd, which is open year round. There are art exhibits and a caf\u00e9 with homemade bread here.<\/li>
  • H\u00e4ljeby Herrg\u00e5rd (Hedeby S\u00e4teri) is run as a Bed & Breakfast and offers rooms in the manor house dating back to 1789. imagine if walls could talk.<\/li>
